Improve Quality of Life
That’s what I do as a Nightingale Memory Consultant
Yes, it IS possible to help someone living with memory loss to manage their worries and apprehensions, and even regain some cognitive abilities.
People living with memory concerns who use these strategies show real improvements in:
Improved focused concentration
Short term-memory improvements
Better memory recall of important events
Improved socialization
Increased confidence to carry out daily activities
Reduced levels of worry
Increased self-motivation
… creating an Agreed Shared Action Plan, and providing true person-centered care that includes:
brain coaching exercises,
relaxation techniques,
exercise,
and Mediterranean style eating.
It’s starts by working with the person living with a memory issue, and their family or carer…
How does it work?
At the start of our journey together, I will see you every week for six weeks and then every two weeks or monthly after that to maintain the regaining of cognitive abilities and slow down the process of memory loss.
Your first session will be for two hours and after those sessions are one and half hours. We cover brain health coaching; lifestyle changes and I teach everyone relaxation techniques.
I help the family and carer by giving them useful proven techniques and strategies that they will be able to use naturally, easily, and effortlessly in their daily lives.
As a Nightingale Memory Consultant, I am able to deliver a “family support package” which will help improve quality of life for the Carer and person living with the memory concern.
Why do I love to do this work?
My Story…
My Grandma had dementia and at one time lived with us. When I was a child, my Grandma taught me to knit and we would sit for hours knitting squares to make a dog blanket, for the dog I so desperately wanted! Whilst I was away at boarding school my Grandma knitted a beautiful sweater but it had four arms. I can recollect that she was discouraged from knitting anymore, Grandma became difficult and went into a care home.
Whilst I was studying for this Diploma it struck me that my Grandma had probably knitted the sweater for my dog which is why it had not four arms but four legs!
I was not at home to remind her of why she had knitted a four armed/legged sweater. Grandma’s difficult behavior was possibly a result of her purpose being taking away and she no longer felt valued as a person with her own identity.
If I had been at home my Grandma or I would have said that the sweater she knitted was for the dog that I was longing for.
It is vital to stay in the reality of the person living with memory issues. Maintaining their skills gives them purpose and keeps their identity intact.
Once at the care home my Grandma would go “walking with purpose”. Sadly, this is often referred to as “wandering”. However, Grandma was regularly found by the Vicar. I believe she was “walking with purpose” to the church. My Grandma ‘s name was Gladys, and the Vicar would call her Gladioli. My Logo has a Gladiolus on it, which represents my Grandma.
In case you are wondering, I am the hummingbird looking after and pollinating the Gladioli.
My Grandma’s experience is my why and my purpose to help those living with memory concerns, enhance their quality of life and maintain their dignity and identity by reducing the fear, worries and the stigma attached to having memory difficulties.
I have also always had a fear of getting memory issues myself. However, I now know that there are things that I can do to take responsibility for my own Brain Health. I also know that the journey of living with a memory concern can be different to one so often reported, thanks to the research conducted by Dr. Daniel Nightingale and Dr. Simon Duff. They found that calming methods can slow down the impacts of memory loss and improve the quality of life for those living with this condition.
What else should you know?
